In this project, for IPD 5010, we built a chessboard. We wanted a really classic-looking board with a fun theme. The pieces are themed after coke bottles over the years. The king is the original coke bottle from 1894. The rook is a modern coke can. We made the pieces out of aluminum that we turned on the Haas TL-1 using CNC tool paths. We sandblasted these pieces and then had them anodized red and black. We attached these pieces to based to add weight to the pieces. The red pieces were paired with a steel base and the black pieces were paired with a brass base.

For the board, we used a wood CNC to cut pockets out of a large walnut board. Then, we laser cut black and white acrylic tiles and placed them into the pockets on the board.
